Los abscesos cerebrales son muy raros en la actualidad en todo el mundo. Su
aparición depende de otras enfermedades como la meningitis, otitis, cardiopatías como la
endocarditis, entre otras. En nuestro medio el porcentaje de la población (prevalencia) y
velocidad con la que se desarrolla el AC (incidencia) es de 0,3-1,3 por 100.000 pacientes
en un año para las bacterias. La inflamación de los senos paranasales y las enfermedades
cardiacas congénitas son estables con respecto a su incidencia. Los AC luego de
traumatismos, enfermedades como el virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana,
inmunodepresión de tipo iatrogénico han ido en aumento.
