Es una infección intracerebral focal, que comienza con un área de cerebritis y se desarrolla, en días, como una colección de pus rodeada por una cápsula bien vascularizada. El curso suele ser subagudo (días) y la clínica inespecífica. La cefalea es el síntoma más frecuente, al que pueden asociarse signos de hipertensión intracraneal (alteración de consciencia o parálisis de pares craneales), déficit neurológico focal o crisis convulsiva. La fiebre aparece en aproxi-madamente la mitad de los pacientes, a veces asociada a signos focales de infección (otitis, sinusi-tis, etc.).
