Los antimicrobianos tienen su origen en el año 1944, el microbiólogo de suelos Waksman realizaba una investigación sobre microorganismos productores de antibióticos, como resultado descubrió la estreptomicina, este acontecimiento marcó el inicio de la época dorada de los antibióticos considerados como quimioterápicos naturales, y después de varios estudios, obtuvieron decenas de nuevos antimicrobianos que provenían de actinomicetos, otras bacterias y hongos. Existe una extensa variedad de familias y grupos de antimicrobianos, que se diferencian por los mecanismos que los conforman, por la actividad antibacteriana que generan al inhibir el crecimiento o al generar la apoptosis.
