Diagnosis and treatment of acute gastric volvulus: Case report

Introduction: Gastric volvulus is a condition characterized by the abnormal rotation of the stomach on its own axis, which produces various degrees of gastric obstruction and causes strangulation, necrosis or gastric perforation, which requires rapid diagnosis and resolution.
Presentation of the case: An 86-year-old female patient with a history of chronic arterial hypertension, mild aortic insufficiency and cystocele presented with a 24-hour clinical picture characterized by nausea leading to vomiting, headache, elevated temperature and cough with expectoration. Simple tomography of the abdomen and pelvis reports a hiatal hernia. Exploratory laparotomy was performed and gastric volvulus and ileocecal volvulus were resolved.
Discussion: Early diagnosis of gastric volvulus is important to avoid complications; A high index of suspicion and the support of imaging techniques such as computed tomography facilitate the diagnosis. The treatment is surgical using open surgery techniques or less invasive techniques such as laparoscopy or endoscopy.
Conclusions: Acute gastric volvulus is a rare and life-threatening surgical emergency; Its diagnosis is difficult and requires the support of computed tomography. The treatment is aimed at reducing gastric volvulus and correcting anatomical defects.
