Abstract

A partir del 2010, un grupo de expertos de distintos departamentos de investigación -en su mayoría norteamericanos-, encabezados por Menon et al, propusieron una definición para el trauma craneoencefálico (TCE) que sea capaz de abarcar todo el espectro de gravedad que esta lesión pudiese desencadenar. Se establece entonces, que el TCE es: una alteración en la función cerebral o cualquier otra evidencia de patología cerebral causada por una fuerza externa. En esta definición se toma en cuenta también que la lesión puede ser reconocida no únicamente por criterio clínico sino también mediante evidencia de paraclínicos laboratoriales e imagenológicos. Lo primordial de esta definición es que no se centra en la lesión de la cabeza sino del cerebro.
