Acute pancreatitis is one of the most common diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, it is characterized by an acute inflammation of the exocrine pancreas, it is associated with a lesion of the acinar cells giving rise to both a local and systemic inflammatory response. It is considered a common indication for hospital admission, and there is currently an increasing incidence even in children, the elderly and pregnant women. General objective: To describe the efficacy of the APACHE and Balthazar scales to assess the severity of acute pancreatitis. Methodology: A systematic review of the main biomedical sources and databases was carried out. The most relevant articles published in the last 5 years (from 2017 to present) were included. The search was performed in English mainly because it is the vehicular language in the medical field, as well as in Spanish. Results: 11 scientific articles were described in which details about these two scales APACHE and Balthazar were described efficacy was assessed from the area under the ROC curve, Kappa, P-value being these the most important. Conclusions: The APACHE and Balthazar scoring scales possess a similarity in terms of efficacy that have been analyzed in the different studies. These scales have a high specificity and sensitivity and are very useful to accurately identify the severity of the disease and even facilitate the implementation of appropriate clinical treatments.
