Impact of Migration on the Dignified Life of Older Adults in Situations of Abandonment

Migration is a constant phenomenon throughout human history, aimed at improving quality of life; however, it generates significant consequences. In Ecuador, this phenomenon profoundly impacts older adults when their family members migrate. It not only excludes them from social participation but also undermines their emotional, psychological, and material well-being. In this context, the State holds the responsibility to guarantee their fundamental rights, aligned with the principles of Buen Vivir and the Constitution. The study aims to analyze the impact of migration on the dignified life of abandoned older adults and evaluate public policies designed to mitigate migration and protect this vulnerable population. Methodologically, a mixed approach was used, combining surveys and a bibliographic review in a representative sample of the economically active population in Riobamba. The results reveal that 93% of respondents believe that migration negatively affects the dignified life of older adults, while state policies have been perceived as insufficient. The study highlights the need for more effective public policies and future research to assess existing strategies, design community intervention models, and explore technologies to strengthen support for this population.
