Punitive populism; Solution or social placebo?

Introduction: Punitive populism maintains a dichotomous position, it is expressed as a trend that obtains citizen approval, through the toughening of penalties, while political discourse positions it as an efficient solution to social problems such as crime and insecurity.
Development: The research explains the background of punitive populism and at the same time identifies whether this trend operates as a solution to citizen problems or acts as a simple social placebo. The present study is carried out in light of the comparative method and the doctrinal legal review. in order to respond to this dilemma.
Practical applications or future lines of research: It is necessary for governments to lean their actions towards the generation and execution of crime prevention programs and the improvement of the penal system, in line with the principles of gradualness and justice.
Conclusions: Finally, it is evident that punitive populism constitutes a strong discursive tool used by the political class in the region, which achieves citizen approval based on subjectivism but is far from solving social problems.
