Quality of Life in Subjects with Metabolic Syndrome: A Multidisciplinary Approach in an Ecuadorian Population

Introduction: Metabolic syndrome (MS), which includes abdominal obesity, hyperglycemia, hypertension, and dyslipidemias, is a significant public health issue, negatively impacting quality of life through its components and associated comorbidities.
Methodology: A cross-sectional and observational study in adults over 34 years old attending the Rheumatology service at a health center in Azogues, Ecuador. The study involved a sample of 161, with clinical, anthropometric, and paraclinical data collection. Quality of life (COOP/WONCA) and MS were evaluated according to ALAD (Latin American Diabetes Association) criteria, using statistical analysis with SPSS software.
Results: The study found a 48.2% prevalence of MS, predominantly in women and those over 70 years old, mainly urban residents with primary education. Quality of life showed declines in physical form and general health status in patients with MS. There was a significant relationship between hypertension and worse quality of life in terms of general activities.
Conclusions: This study reveals a significant prevalence of MS, notably affecting the physical dimension of the patients' quality of life.
