Intestinal volvulus a cause of acute abdomen: Case report

Introduction: Intestinal volvulus is an uncommon condition characterized by abnormal twisting of an intestinal loop around its own axis or its mesentery; its clinical presentation and radiographic findings are very non-specific, so it requires a high degree of suspicion for its diagnosis and early resolution.
Objective: Document and present our experience with a case of intestinal volvulus in adulthood and to carry out an updated literature review on the diagnosis and treatment of this condition.
Presentation of the case: A 74-year-old female patient with a history of chronic arterial hypertension, hypothyroidism, cesarean section and laparoscopic appendectomy presented with a 3-day history of abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. Computed tomography using contrast shows intestinal obstruction at the level of the ileum due to probable adhesiónal origin. Exploratory laparotomy was performed, ileo-ileal adhesions were released and intestinal volvulus was reduced.
Conclusions: Intestinal volvulus is a very rare cause of acute abstructive abdomen whose clinical and radiological diagnosis is difficult. Treatment is surgical to correct the volvulus and restore circulation, but the best surgical technique has not yet been established.
