Emotional Intelligence and Perception of Risky Sexual Behaviors in University Students

Sexually transmitted diseases are a public health problem that most frequently affects young adults; therefore, the objective of this research is to relate the variables emotional intelligence and perception of sexual risk behaviors in university students. This study had a non-experimental quantitative approach, descriptive level with correlational and cross-sectional scope. The sample consisted of 179 university students, 72 males and 107 females between 18 and 28 years of age, who met certain inclusion and exclusion criteria and responded about their emotional intelligence skills through the Trait Meta Mood Scale (TMMS-24) and the Risk Perception Scale for Sexual Behavior and were selected by non-probabilistic convenience sampling. The results showed that there is a slight positive relationship between the emotional repair dimension and perception of sexual risk behaviors in university students, and it is concluded that the greater the emotional repair or ability to regulate emotions, the greater the ability to perceive sexual risk behaviors.
