Economic performance of MiPymes in the agricultural sector in the province of Cotopaxi, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic

Micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MiPymes) in the agricultural sector of the province of Cotopaxi play an important role in local economic development; therefore, in order to ensure their economic sustainability, it is essential that they seek adequate financial tools to guarantee their continuity and long-term survival, particularly in the context of contingency situations such as the one that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this sense, the objective of this research was to analyze the financial-accounting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on MiPymes in the province of Cotopaxi in order to adapt a financial risk model to facilitate decision making. For this purpose, surveys and questionnaires were applied to company managers from the database of the Superintendence, Companies, Securities and Insurance. The results show that the agricultural companies did not have the necessary preparation to face the pandemic, which led 34.80% of them to experience a significant financial impact that affected the results of the financial-accounting information analysis. Based on the information analyzed, a financial risk model was designed to provide companies with a technical tool to evaluate risks and thus mitigate them, in order to be prepared for a new contingency whose risks are greater in companies in the agricultural sector, which in turn are more vulnerable to changes in the environment.
