Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Land Use Changes Associated with Aggregate and Crushed Stone Mining in Tena, Ecuador

The objective of the research was to determine the influence of the aggregate and stone mining activity on the change of land use, in 5 mining concessions located in the Balsayaku community, Tena canton, Napo province. The period analyzed was 2015-2020, however, the year 2013 was analyzed to have a reference on the characteristics of the environment prior to the start of mining. For its development, the supervised classification methodologies were used to establish the land uses of the area and the Braimoh index to verify the changes in the surface of the area. The results show us, on average, that the change in land use produced by mining activity directly and indirectly, in hectares was: -8.45 for forest, 4.32 for body of water, 6.24 for agricultural land, 0.13 for anthropic zone , -9.17 for other land and -1.70 for agricultural land without cultivation. In conclusion, it was established that the changes in the area were produced mainly by mining activity, requiring the application of corrective actions such as: determining suitable exploitation areas and using adequate extraction systems such as scraping bars and cuts in front of the mirror. of water, being the most efficient and environmentally sustainable.
