The automation of mechanical-pneumatic systems is essential in modern industry due to its impact on efficiency, safety, and process reliability. This study analyzes the design and automation principles of such systems through a theoretical-applied review based on industrial pneumatics and programmable logic controllers (PLC), considering the IEC 61131-3 standard and the VDI 2225 methodology. A structured narrative review of relevant studies was conducted, categorizing evidence according to methodological approach and purpose. The study addresses the fundamentals of industrial automation, control systems, pneumatic actuators, and programming languages, as well as technical and economic criteria for solution selection. Results show that integrating industrial pneumatics and PLCs, together with structured design methodologies and international standards, enables the development of flexible and scalable systems with adequate operational performance. This approach is a viable solution for industrial, academic, and prototyping environments, with potential integration into Industry 4.0.
