Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease with a worldwide prevalence between 1.3% and 4.1%. Its systemic nature involves damage beyond the joint system, with hematological alterations standing out among the extra-articular manifestations, anemia being the most common. The objective is to describe the pattern of hematological involvement in patients with RA treated at the Inmunolab-Riobamba laboratory, focusing on anemia. The study method is descriptive and documentary, based on the analysis of clinical examinations of 20 patients with RA between August 2024 and March 2025. Descriptive statistics were applied to evaluate hematological alterations, frequency, mean age, and prevalence. Six cases with anemia were studied in depth, as this was the most representative alteration.
The results are: Average age: 47 years; female predominance (70%). All patients had CRP >10 mg/L and 90% RF >15 IU/ml. Forty-five percent of the cases showed associated histological diseases, 25% anemia, 5% hyperchromia, and 10% thrombocytopenia. The six cases with anemia shared common patterns in the complete blood count. It is concluded that anemia is the most common hematological disorder in patients with RA, affecting mostly women over 50 years of age.
