Data Over Sound (DoS) technology offers an innovative alternative for data transmission using acoustic signals. This study presents a comparative analysis of the effect of modulation type on the transmission error rate of a DoS system over FM radio. An FM DoS communication system was implemented to transmit and receive text messages at different rates and using different types of modulation: FSK, BPSK, and QPSK. Through experimental testing and statistical analysis using ANOVA and Tukey’s POST HOC test, it was confirmed that there are significant differences in the error rate among the modulations, with FSK being the most efficient, presenting an error rate of 37%, while BPSK and QPSK showed nearly identical performance. The study is complemented by a review of the state of the art, comparing the results with previous international research. It is evident that, although other developments achieve higher transmission rates in controlled environments or using ultrasonic frequencies, the approach proposed here stands out for its practical applicability, low cost, compatibility with conventional equipment, and the potential in terms of transmission range which depends almost entirely on the coverage of traditional FM radio systems.
