Introduction: The residual effect of antiseptics and disinfectants in healthcare environments represents a critical and important aspect of the prevention of the spread of pathogenic bacteria such as Enterococcus faecium (E. faecium).
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the residual effect of disinfectants and antiseptics used in hospital care settings against E. faecium.
Methodology: The most widely used antiseptics and disinfectants in Ecuador were used according to the Biosafety Manual of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP by its Spanish acronym) in different time intervals: 20 minutes, one, three, six, twelve, and twenty-four hours using the Kirby Bauer technique to observe the formation of inhibition halos of the bacteria against the chemical product.
Results: The results allowed to observe that ethanol 70%, sodium hypochlorite 0.5%, potassium monopersulfate 1%, glutaraldehyde 2%, and povidone-iodine 10% did not present a residual effect because they did not generate a halo of inhibition. However, E. faecium demonstrated sensitivity to 0.4% quaternary ammonium, followed by 2% chlorhexidine, in which the bacteria showed high sensitivity. On the other hand, hydrogen peroxide 10 Vol., E. faecium, initially showed sensitivity, but after 12 hours, it became non-existent.
Conclusion: In conclusion, E. faecium proved to be resistant to most of the hospital disinfectants tested, except chlorhexidine and hydrogen peroxide, suggesting a potential risk for antimicrobial resistance.
