Introduction: Front-line health personnel are affected in their different personal spheres, as well as the people under their care. There are no measures to counteract short- or long-term effects that result in learning and self-regulation processes. Different instruments were used to assess anxiety and stress directly and indirectly.
Development: Narrative review, choosing twelve studies from the Scopus, Scielo, PubMed and Web of Science databases.
Practical applications or future lines of research: It is relevant to carry out further studies on health personnel regarding the consequences of anxiety and stress experienced in a pandemic, as well as establish immediate first aid protocols during a health emergency.
Conclusions: Chronic and acute anxiety events, chronic distress and stress are directly and significantly affected by their work on the front line; specific intervention protocols are not yet provided, aimed at improving these aspects of mental health in healthcare workers. There is little research regarding the impact of anxiety and stress on healthcare workers during the pandemic. The instrument to evaluate it (DASS-21) shows a good degree of internal consistency and validity for the Latino population, adapted for different cultural and linguistic contexts.
