There are very few studies that emphasize the macrovascular and microvascular complications of DM, which justifies conducting this literature review to ensure a comprehensive approach. This study aims to know the situation of diabetes mellitus worldwide, considering epidemiological and clinical data, macrovascular and microvascular complications associated with age at diagnosis.Method: The data was obtained from Scopus, Scielo and Sciencedirect, including articles updated since 2017.Different scientific articles were selected that include topics such the effect of age at the time of diabetes diagnosis on macrovascular complications and microvascular complications of diabetes in adults with type 2 diabetes, and articles comparing the efficacy of pharmacological treatment with degrees of evidence.Data from 15 observational studies involving 8131 people from 8 countries was included. Diabetes mellitus is a growing global problem whose etiology is based on insulin deficiency to a different degree, this chronic hyperglycemic state produces microvascular and macrovascular complications if not treated properly, the guidelines provided by the ADA and ALAD are a great tool for offer timely and efficient treatment to diabetic patients.
