Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, nursing professionals have faced great pressure and emotional challenges in their daily work. Emotional intelligence has become crucial to help these professionals cope with stress, maintain empathy, and provide quality care to patients. Emotional intelligence in nursing professionals implies the ability to recognize, understand and manage both their own emotions and the emotions of others. This includes the ability to remain calm in stressful situations, show empathy towards patients and their families, and establish effective communication. In this sense, the research was oriented to determine the quality of emotional intelligence in students of the State University of Bolívar, because their emotional intelligence is vital within their profession, for which a questionnaire instrument was applied to 125 students of different academic cycles, of which 102 responses were validated correctly, the questionnaire to measure emotional intelligence was based on Saloveyet's Trait Meta-Mood Scale, developed by Carranque et al (2004), which has been validated and used in different investigations that measure EI, is made up of 24 items that evaluate 3 factors: attention to feelings, emotional clarity and emotional repair. The results obtained from the study denote an average score of 25.82 (±1.19) in emotional attention, an average score of 19.18 (±1.04) in emotional clarity and an average score of 22.01 (±1 ,30) in emotional repair, these responses show that they can feel and express feelings adequately, however they show shortcomings in understanding their own emotions and those of others, as well as they do not have the ability to regulate their emotional states, it is evident the The need to develop strategies to improve the emotional intelligence of future nursing professionals, since in general it translates into better quality and empathic care for patients in order to improve health services.
