Chronic gastritis and its relation to periodontal disease

The oral cavity with periodontal disease is considered as an extragastric reservoir of Helicobacter pylori, this gram negative bacillus is found in approximately 50% of the population worldwide and it is also mentioned as the main etiological agent of chronic gastritis. The present investigation was carried out with the objective of analyzing the relationship between chronic gastritis and periodontal disease. Through a review of the literature, it was determined that there is a correlation between the two disorders, which share an inflammatory state that can intervene in the pathogenesis, being necessary a simultaneous treatment to avoid reinfections or aggravations either in the gastrointestinal tract or in the supporting tissue of the teeth.
