The rights of people deprived of liberty in the Ecuadorian prison system.

Due in part to the constant violation of the human rights of those deprived of liberty; the Ecuadorian government has focused its attention on improving the conditions of respect for human rights, based on social care for those deprived of liberty and on the legal framework that guarantees the protection of their rights. Considering the importance of human rights for the prison population, a bibliographic review was carried out by consulting specialized databases in Latindex, Scielo, Dialnet, and Google academic; 200 articles were consulted, which aimed at identifying the main human rights violations were selected, its causes, consequences, the constitutional and criminal legal instruments established for their protection. The results reveal that human rights violations are common in the Ecuadorian prison system, the procedural delay, physical and psychological abuse, and the impossibility of access to quality food, health, and education services are emphasized. The main causes are the lack of respect for due process and overcrowding in prisons, which results in increased violence and the failure to reintegrate the prison population into Ecuadorian society.
